Sustainable Coffee at Uncommon Grounds

Sustainable Coffee

According to Wikipedia, the term “Fair Trade” is a protocol which originated in the 1990s that attempts to set an equal or “fair” payment standard for goods producers in developing countries. Coffee, cocoa, honey, flowers, sugar, tea, and fresh fruit farmers benefit most from this standard. The Fair Trade movement also includes goals to empower farmers to become more involved in the economic process by which their businesses are run.

Uncommon Grounds has been receiving and roasting Fair Trade coffee for the past decade and has witnessed dramatic improvements in the quality of the beans that fall into this category. Since our main concern with coffee beans is taste, we were cautious to introduce the the fair trade line until the quality warranted it. Thankfully, these offerings have increased enough in quality and volume over the years that we are proud to feature at least one Fair Trade certified coffee “on tap” daily at our stores; often two.
